Tipping Etiquette and Calculations
Tipping is a common practice in many countries, especially the United States, to show appreciation for good service. While customs can vary, there are general guidelines that can help you determine an appropriate amount.
How Much to Tip?
For table service at a restaurant in the U.S., the standard tipping range is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill.
- 15% is generally considered the minimum for acceptable service.
- 18% is a good middle-ground for solid service.
- 20% or more is appropriate for excellent service.
For other services like food delivery, bartenders, or hairdressers, the expected tip can vary. This calculator is designed primarily for restaurant bills but can be used in any situation where a percentage-based tip is appropriate.
Splitting the Bill
When dining with friends, splitting the bill is common. Our calculator makes this easy. After calculating the total amount (bill + tip), it divides that total by the number of people you specify. This ensures everyone pays an equal share of both the bill and the tip, avoiding confusion and making the payment process smoother for everyone, including the server.
Quick Tip Trick: A simple way to estimate a 20% tip is to move the decimal point of the bill one place to the left and double the amount. For a $54.00 bill, moving the decimal gives you $5.40. Doubling that gives you a tip of $10.80.
